Is MicroStrategy stock or its xStock version halal?
Question context
MicroStrategy became one of the most discussed investment vehicles during the 2024 to 2026 Bitcoin bull cycle. Community members asked whether MSTRx tokenized shares are permissible since MicroStrategy holds Bitcoin.
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
MicroStrategy is Haram regardless of how its shares are tokenized. MicroStrategy's entire business model is acquiring Bitcoin using interest-bearing convertible bonds. The company issues debt instruments to fund Bitcoin purchases as its primary business activity. This debt-based model fails AAOIFI Islamic equity screening decisively with a debt ratio exceeding 90%. A Haram company's stock does not become halal because it is tokenized on a blockchain. The blockchain wrapper is neutral. The underlying business is not. MSTRx is Haram regardless of the platform, the technology, or the Bitcoin exposure it provides.
